Highland Energy's mission is to seek out and acquire permitted surface coal mining and coal refuse impoundments with the intent to excavate, process, sell, and ship run-of-mine and waste coarse and fine coal. Through strategic relationships in the industry, Highland also is positioned to process ultra-fine waste coal to improve the BTU's and reduce the ash and moisture content of the coal, thus creating an enhanced feed stock for pulverized coal injection (PCI) electric power generating facilities as well as improve aged waste coal to a metallurgical or near-metallurgical quality. Using these same relationships, Highland is also able to produce and sell bio-mass coal into the utility industry that will meet the federal and various state "renewable fuel" qualifications, thus creating tax and energy credits for itself and the end using utility.
